2011 Upper Hunter Steel Magnolia Award

Lifeline Newcastle & Hunter is very proud to announce that Muswellbrook woman Janene Gageler has been crowned as the 2011 Upper Hunter Steel Magnolia Award recipient.

Over the years, the Upper Hunter Steel Magnolia Award has uncovered and showcased some of the selfless women working to make our world a better place and this year was no exception. The award is given to a woman from the Greater Cessnock or Upper Hunter region who has faced adversity and made a considerable contribution to the community.

Janene received the award for her extensive, long-term humanitarian work and her strength in the face of debilitating health issues. Janene’s campaign to help the poor, particularly in the Philippines and Indonesia, began as a child and has not abated to this day.

“Janene is always on the look out to make a difference to those who are suffering, on the fringe and forgotten.” said Cathy Wilson, one of Janene’s three nominators. “Right from a small child Janene had a heart for those in need - she was destined to become someone who would make a difference whilst on this earth.”

The 2011 Upper Hunter Steel Magnolia Award was presented at an elegant luncheon at Hunter Valley Gardens on Friday 9th September.

Guest speaker at the award was Dr. Maggie Haertsch who is a registered nurse and midwife, has a PhD in behavioural science, is a consultant and IT entrepreneur, inventor and film maker and now CEO of the newly formed charity, the Arts Health Institute. Like Janene, Maggie is driven to make a meaningful difference in the world. Her compassionate heart and humanitarian work has seen her visit the far corners of the globe.

Lifeline Newcastle & Hunter would like to thank the award’s Major Supporter ResCo Services for their continued generosity and Janene’s nominators for putting pen to paper to share her incredible story. The generosity of luncheon supporters Hunter Valley Gardens, Blooms and Bloons, Singleton Argus, Mary Kay Cosmetics and Leonard’s Wholesale Diamonds is greatly appreciated as is the support from the many local businesses that provided gifts for Janene and raffle prizes for guests.

As well as celebrating local women, the award presentation is a vital fundraising event for Lifeline Newcastle & Hunter.
